Today on #28DaysofBandra, we chat with Deepak Benekar. A guard at Mehboob Studios for 22 years, he’s a #Bandra guy himself, and loves his job, especially when kids come for gigs. “Bachche enjoy karte hain, achha lagta hai.” (It’s nice to see youngsters enjoy themselves.”) He’s seen all the #Bollywood stars come here for shoots, but never asked them for a selfie – they’re just doing their work, after all, he says. His #favourite places in the neighbourhood, apart from this one? Mount Mary Church, which he visits often. “Christian nahin hoon toh kya hua? Bhagwan ek hi hai, bas naam alag hain. Mujhe Haji Ali bhi bahut achha lagta hai.” (So what if I’m not a Christian? There’s only one God who goes by different names. I like Haji Ali a lot as well.” 📷: @samira.sood

Today’s #CNTGiveItAShot is this softly dreamy perspective of Hyderabad’s Chowmahalla Palace. We #love the quiet #sepia #sunlight filtering in through the #windows, almost competing with those masses of chandeliers. #Didyouknow the #palace took several decades to be built, even though it was commissioned in 1750? Just imagine the kind of #history it must have seen. If only those lights could talk. 📷: @theseekingsoul

Everyone needs a break from work sometimes, don’t they? Like this man taking a breather from selling his colourful toy pinwheels on #Bandstand in #Bandra. The seafacing promenade in #Mumbai is also where you’ll find couples out for a #romantic stroll, elderly folk concentrating on an intense game of chess, #chai and #coffee vendors, occasionally a pianist playing old songs. You’d think you’ve walked straight into an 18th-century #landscape #painting by Turner or Gainsborough, but this stunning, #moody idyll is actually a photo by @vuthearakham shot in Orkhon Valley, #Mongolia. #Didyouknow the Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape was listed as a #UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004, for representing the evolution of nomadic pastoral traditions that go back more than 2,000 years? The region also includes some incredible historical #monuments, such as the remains of Karakorum, the capital of Genghis Khan’s Mongol Empire in the #medieval era.

If you’re in #Mumbai and in need of a #sexy haircut, chances are you’ve been told to head straight to @madowothair, the brainchild of celebrity hairstylist and general cool girl @sapnamotibhavnani. Raised in #Bandra, she recalls her teens with a smile. “My friends and I used to ride our motorbikes down Carter Road and then hang out outside Sunflower and Gulab building because that was where all the cute boys would hang out. This was before the speed breakers and limits came along, of course.” While the neighbourhood has expanded and welcomed #people of all stripes over the years, Sapna has a sureshot way of identifying the newbies. “The ones who shop at Pali market are the newcomers. All the Bandra veterans know that’s where fruit and veggies are almost three times more expensive than other markets.” 📷: @shrekjenny

We’re celebrating #Bandra all through the month, so how could it be complete without #yoga? The #Mumbai suburb is dotted with yoga studios and on any given day, you’ll see students and practitioners on their way to or from class right from 6am, carrying their mats and water bottles and looking super-Zen. One of the most popular teachers around is Tanvi Mehra, the founder of Tangerine Arts Studio, whose #love affair with Bandra is about 30 years long. She was born and raised here, got married here and works here. So where does this yogini find her #peace? “Unarguably, my studio. My massive window opens up to a beautiful, sprawling mango tree and in the few quiet moments I get here, I just sit and do nothing, or get into my self-practice.” 📷: @athulprasad

“It kind of astounds me that I’ve never really explored Bandra,” says @sunhilsippy. So last Sunday, he made it a point to get up early and do just that. He ambled into bylane after bylane, stopping to chat with #people who invited him into their homes, exploring different corners, really getting the #vibe of #Bandra, and after a while, he had lost all sense of time. He was at a tailoring shop when he heard #music from outside. He wandered out to the street to see what was going on. And there he was, this man named Joe, playing Dave Brubeck’s Take Five on his trumpet as rickshaws whizzed past. And just like that, in the middle of the street, Sunhil was treated to a live #jazz concert.

Was Belinda Carlisle here when she sang Heaven Is a Place on Earth? This is Admont Abbey, a Benedictine #monastery in #Austria, known for its stunning #architecture, #art and #library. Built in 1074, it’s the oldest surviving monastery in the larger Styria region; much of it had to be rebuilt after a massive fire in 1865. One part that could be salvaged was its library. The largest monastery library in the world, it houses tens of thousands of volumes, not even half the monastery’s full collection, and was built in 1776 according to the principles of Enlightenment that were sweeping across #Europe at the time. 📷: @allieprovost

And it’s a wrap, folks. Our 1,200km #journey took us into the primal #jungle of #Namdapha where we saw the endangered #hornbill and learned how tribal communities interact with the #forest (like at the school in this photo). In the threatened riverine system of Majuli, we met Jadav Payeng and saw first-hand how one human can make a difference. And, in #Kaziranga, we witnessed how private-public partnership has led to the regeneration of not only the #rhino population, but also of other endangered species such as slick back otters and vultures. The thing about #travel is that you never know whom you’ll meet and become #friends with. CNT’s @champarani met this little guy in #Rishikesh over the #weekend. “He followed us around and helped us find a cool place to work,” she says. “He sniffed everyone and the bags to make sure we were all good, almost like our own guard dog, and once he was done with that, flopped down in a patch of sun next to us for a snooze.” Sounds like a pretty good pal to us.

@awaara_musaafirr woke up at 5am and was out in the bitter cold with his family to try and spot a #tiger at Kanha Kisli National Park in Madhya Pradesh. It was their second attempt and it was still unsuccessful. Yet he says that for him, just being in the #jungle and seeing how #nature works was enough. He says we all need to take our kids to the jungle at least once, show them what life in one is like, because if they don’t understand it, how will they help preserve it? We couldn’t agree more. Today on #28DaysofBandra, we head to the #beach. These are the #boat-dotted waters off Chimbai Village, one of Bandra’s most #charming spots. The old fishing village is basically one narrow cobblestone path lined with women selling their freshest catch from their baskets, stalls from which waft the smells of poha and vada pav, shops of undertakers and coffin-makers and higgledy-piggledy homes whose residents play 80s #pop #music and/or Christmas carols all day long. And then there’s the that #sea. Perfect for a lazy #Sunday stroll.

Today on #28DaysofBandra, we chat with Gresham Fernandes (@cookingcures). He’s the executive #chef of the Impresario group, which runs several insanely popular restaurants across #India, as well as this super-cool #graffiti-fronted test kitchen, the St Jude Project, on Waroda Road. But we’re interested in his past. Because he grew up in #Bandra, and even though he now lives in another part of #Mumbai, this suburb is still, in many ways, #home for him. He remembers a time when racing bicycles down Zig Zag Road was the norm; today, he wouldn’t recommend it to kids at all. He remembers going #fishing off Bandstand with his cousins (and being spanked by his grandmother after). He remembers the smell of #Christmas cakes and cookies being baked through December, a smell that is one of his favourite things about the area. 📷: @athulprasad
