Passion Passport: Travel Tips, Holiday Ideas and Vacation Inspiration – April 04, 2018 at 04:40AM

Last week, our team visited Hong Kong to learn more about community initiatives that drive social change there. What we found at New Life Farm amazed us — a thriving community growing an abundance of fresh produce. But what impressed us most was the heart of the organization, which is dedicated to rehabilitating those living with mental health issues. The farm — in conjunction with InterCon Hong Kong — is helping to start a conversation about mental health in a city where the topic is highly stigmatized.
While the end product of the partnership may look like a beautiful salad, there’s so much community, care, and conservation that goes into the dish and the initiative.

Passion Passport: Travel Tips, Holiday Ideas and Vacation Inspiration – April 04, 2018 at 03:26AM

For @sophy_roberts, Bhutan is: “The smell of burning juniper carrying prayers from sacred mountain passes. The jangle of bells around a horse’s neck as it brings a Buddhist monk up to Tiger’s Nest Monastery. The deep rumble of tightly skinned drums and cymbals calling novice monks to prayer. The butter lamps that light up ancient murals in monasteries, depicting saints on the backs of flying tigers. The early morning fog in a blue-pine forest. The silver rivers snaking between white-crested mountains. The time a stranger gives you to talk when you encounter each other on a narrow mountain path. It’s a place of magic.” #passionpassport

“I spent last September with the Tuareg and the Fulani people. Each year, the two groups meet for an annual courtship ritual competition called the Guérewol, which is held among the Wodaabe Fula people of Niger. There, young girls dress in elaborate ornamentation and traditional face paint and gather to dance and sing. I was touched by the culture of the celebration and promised to return next year with the photos I took. I am looking forward to keeping that promise come September.”

“Although I grew up in Cape Town and have lived there most of my life, seeing the city from above stuns me every time. Perhaps it’s the mountains, the sweeping views, or the way the ocean wraps around the coast. But on this particular day, it was the perfectly golden light. It was a surreal experience that I will never forget.”

“This photo is one of a series that focuses on the rice processing farms of Bangladesh. I took this particular shot while standing on the roof of a building on the outskirts of the field. I wanted to capture the aerial view of the grain lines; their repetitive pattern is striking.”

“This image captures the rice workers of Bangladesh tending to the grains on the open fields of a processing farm. Each day, they dry the rice grains in the scorching sun. They work tiring hours and get little return — only making about $1.50 USD per day. It is a difficult job, and one that I find captivating. Despite the current hostile situations in the country, these workers continue to support themselves and their loved ones. It’s a beautiful thing.”

According to filmmaker @flo.nick, a video can be magical. And if any project proves his point, it’s his own film “ALIVE” — a time-lapse video that shows off the remoteness of Canada’s Rockies, the clear glacial pools, and the stunning vistas that make these mountains some of the world’s most beautiful.

Passion Passport: Travel Tips, Holiday Ideas and Vacation Inspiration – March 26, 2018 at 03:30AM

“We spent the morning navigating the narrow streets and canals of Venice, exploring its hidden alcoves and getting increasingly lost its historic charm. It was midwinter, the air was crisp and clean, and the light was somewhat ethereal. Since it was early in the day, a subtle haze cloaked the buildings and waterways, creating delicate shadows and illuminating the bridge directly ahead, almost isolating it from its surroundings. This scene caught my eye among the bustle of locals and dimly lit passages. It was a moment frozen in time.”

“I was on a two-month-long backpacking trip through Europe when I decided to take an impromptu flight to Morocco. I wanted to see the iconic-blue hillside town of Chefchaouen with my own eyes. Although it is a painfully photogenic place, I felt it important to tuck my camera away as a way to respect and preserve its beauty. This is one of the few photos I took there. It is of a woman passing through a square by one of the local water faucets, where both kids and dogs gather to hydrate — a moment that captures the essence of this blue city and its surrounding community.” 📷@moristeele 📍Chefchaouen, Morocco

“I’ve lived in Paris for five years, and have spent every winter waiting to see the city covered in snow. I was starting to believe that it would never happen, but my wish finally came true this year. As soon as I woke up and saw the bright white through the window, I took out my camera and got to work. It was so peaceful; I wanted to convey the calm through a photograph. I felt extremely lucky to be in Paris right then, and to see the Sacré-Cœur covered in snow. It was worth the wait.”

“My favorite part of traveling is when I’m able to wander off and explore a place through my camera lens. This particular shot was taken at the Mausoleum of Mohammed V in Rabat during an extremely hot and sunny afternoon. There was a slight breeze carrying casual conversations from those milling about the Alaouite architecture. The group I was traveling with had already entered the mausoleum, but I thought it’d be interesting to walk to the opposite side and get a grand shot of the entire complex. It was then that I found this beautifully carved and intricate fountain hidden in plain sight.”

“I was walking through Trastevere, and was going to cut through Piazza di Santa Maria on my way home. It was a warm spring day and the piazza was full of movement and activity. I could hear wine glasses clinking and an espresso machine hissing, and the air smelled like simmering tomato sauce. Although I’d seen this woman admiring the piazza several times before, she seemed particularly contented on this day. Even now, I continue to wonder how much time she spends sitting there, watching.”

“The trees of Deadvlei, an iconic landmark in Namibia, come with a morbid twist: they died 700 years ago. As their water source disappeared, they became frozen — unmoving remnants of a lost time. They now sit in a hardened mud pan, surrounded by some of the tallest dunes in the world. The sand structures serve as one of nature’s most spectacular amphitheaters, but here, there are no adoring crowds cheering for their favorite actor, gladiator, or playwright. Instead, there is only silence. This quiet is what allows for deep, internal reflection and intimate moments between you and the landscape.”

“I was immediately drawn to the pink color of the robes these young girls were wearing amidst the bright, golden hues of the revered setting. The fact that they weren’t boys made me do a double-take, and I had to do a bit of extra research to learn that these girls were nuns in training. I love that this photo seems to capture the innocent laughter of childhood and the fact that it can be found anywhere in the world — even right in front of Myanmar’s most sacred Buddhist temple.”

“Although I’ve been an aerial photographer for quite some time, I wanted to challenge myself and shoot in an environment different than the cityscapes and urban sprawls I was used to — I wanted to chase a hot air balloon with my drone. The day I set out to the desert of Dubai, I was both excited and scared, as there were many potential dangers involved. But as soon as the white clouds settled between the balloons, I knew it was worth it. The view was simply incredible.”

“My wife Clo was born in Madagascar and lived there during the first 10 years of her life. She moved to France because of political tensions in 2001 and never returned to her home country. Sixteen years later, we decided to travel there together to see the great baobabs of Tulear, the city she was born in. Standing next to the ancient and towering baobabs made us both feel young and small — a realization that we often need when life becomes hectic. But this part of the fort complex — Panna Meen Ka Kund — was rarely mentioned, so I made sure to ask my guide about it so we could stop during the tour.
